TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network is set to join a 3-year 4 million Euro research project to develop forensic markers for tracing fish back to their geographic origin.
The project, named FishPopTrace, is funded under the European Union's FP7 programme and involves the collaboration of 15 different partners from around the EU, plus groups from Russia and the USA.
The project is utilizing a combination of otolith markers (stable isotopes and morphology), DNA SNP array technology and a number of novel tools such as proteomic markers and fatty acif profiling to characterize population structure in European cod, herring, hake and sole.
TRACE will be responsible for the selection and validation of marker panels for used as applied tools - a primary project output.
